The Peridot, with its arresting green hues, often evoke images of greenery and forests. It is the birthstone for the month of August. Olivine, of which peridot is a variety, is thus named due to its olive green hue.
The peridot, with its high refractive index, is legendary for its high lustre among gemstones. It maintains its dazzle even under low lighting, earning it the honour of also being known as the ‘Evening Emerald’.
It has frequently been confused with the topaz or emerald due to their colour similarity; it did not enjoy much attention until very recently, despite having been mined on St John’s Island (in the Egyptian Red Sea) as far back as 3,500 years ago, giving it a rich heritage.
